Local Charity launches Emergency Fund for Organisations in 2017
A Burton Charity has created a £500,000 emergency fund to help key organisations in East Staffordshire stave off a funding crisis.
With a string of organisations that provide vital services reporting financial pressures as funding cuts bite, the Consolidated Charity of Burton upon Trent has decided to take action to relieve some of the pressure.
It has set aside a special tranche of cash to meet an urgent need and is ready to invite applications. The Consolidated Charity Organisation Emergency Fund 2017 is now open and will close to applications on 31st March 2017.
The Charity’s Chairman Ben Robinson said: “We are conscious of the pressures a lot of important organisations in Burton are under at present and how damaging it would be if we were to lose irreplaceable services that so many people rely on. “Whilst we cannot replace lost funding year-on-year, we can help by giving organisations a bit of breathing room to put in place plans that will make them sustainable in the long term. Essentially we are offering a bridge to the future and we hope that organisations will take advantage of this one off fund.”
The Consolidated Charity is an endowed Charity which aims to benefit the residents of Burton by providing Almshouse accommodation and by making charitable grants to individuals in need and to organisations which serve the community. It is run by a group of volunteer trustees.
The creation of The Consolidated Charity Organisation Emergency Fund 2017 will not have any impact on other areas of activity.
Mr Robinson added: “We annually hand out nearly £270,000 in education bursaries, relief in need support, organisation grants and to fund our almshouses and that will not change in 2017. It was important to the Charity that setting aside the emergency fund did not prevent us from continuing that vital work.
“This fund is above and beyond our normal commitments and is unprecedented for the Charity but these are challenging times and the Trustees felt that it was vital to not stand back but instead to be active in our support.”
