Relief in Need Grants

The Consolidated Charity of Burton upon Trent is hoping to reach more people in need who may benefit from vital grants that can help pay for unexpected bills.

The charity regularly hands out Relief in Need grants to people who due to ill-health, disability, financial hardship or other disadvantages can’t pay for essential items such as cookers or fridges.

However, trustees feel that some people who might apply are not taking advantage of the help that can be provided.

Sandra Phillips, who chairs the Relief in Need sub-committee, said: “We help dozens of people who are struggling to pay for essential items but we still feel that some people are missing out, particularly the elderly who may be struggling but take pride in not asking for help.

“But we know that anyone can struggle to make ends meet through no fault of their own and then face unexpected bills such as when a washing machine breaks down.
“We would encourage anyone who needs support to make an application which will then be considered by the trustees.”

Consolidated Charity does not offer cash payments but will cover costs for essential items up to a maximum of £600.

These include:
- Cookers, fridge freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers
- Carpets, furniture and bedding
- Mobility aids
- School uniforms

The Charity will not award grants to clear debt.

All grants are made entirely at the discretion of the charity’s trustees and there is no right of appeal.

Each application needs to include bank statements and other financial information and must be accompanied by a letter from a support worker – such as a Social Worker, Probation Officer, Tenancy Support Worker or Health Visitor.

The clerk’s office can guide you through the application process.
